The size of Lacquer Box: 6 1/2" L x 3 5/8" W x 1 7/8" H. Beautiful Japanese Makie Lacquer box made by famous kyoto lacuqer artist, Zohiko. The body is made with wood finished with fine Roiro(black) makie. It has the design of Matsu and Koi (pine tree and carp) design. Japanese called it Shori which is also same sound as Win(shori). The carp is done in beautiful Takamakie with gold and silver finish. Pine tree neddle work and branch is exquisitely done. Inside cover has Kinpun(gold cloud)finish done very well. The condition of box excellent, no chip, no crack and no hairline. Little wear on bottom. It came with Tomobako. Outside box said, Shori Makie, Tabacco Hako. Inaide cover with Heian(Kyoto) Zohiko and his chop seal. Please note 8th photo front line showing wrinkle is the refection of photo tent corner line. Box do not have wrinkle. Dating the box from late 1920's to 1930's. The box was probablly made by 8th Zohiko, Nishimura Hikobei(1887-1965). Zohiko, Zohiko family goes back to 1661 as Asai Shichibei started the business as Chinese art dealer. Since the, fist Nishimura Hikobei(1781-1788) started Zohiko lacquer shop. during 300 hundreds years Japan's lacquer hisoty they have created fine Kyoto Urushi works in Japan's art frields. This if one of fine example by Zohiko. |
