The size of Chawan: 4 1/2" Dia x 2 13/16" High. Very fine Japanese Korai Seiji Unkaku Zu Chawan(Korean Celadon crand and clouds design tea bowl). It is very fine made with only less than 1/8" thick wall which make the chawan feel lighter weight on hand. It has the design of Korean design with crane, clouds as well as there are two Kanji Letter of Uta-Ya in two circle other than crane design. All of designs are Zogan(inlaid) with white glazing which are from Korai finish. Same zogan finished inside. The contidion of Chawan Excellent, no chip, no crack and no hairline. Chawan was made by 19th Hozan in Kyoto. Tomobako cover writtne, Unkaku-I(crane and clouds design), Chawan. 19th Hozan-zo(made) with his chop seal. There is also Kanji writting inside cover, but only two letter I can read is Uta-Ya, two letter wrote on outside because of fine calligraphtistic writing. Then Utaya's chop seal. I think this chawan was commissioned work for Uta-Ya. The dating of Chawan from 1960's. Unrinin Hozan 19th century, Unrinin Hozan(Yasunosuke) was born in 1908 and passed away in 1982. His family, first Unrinin Tarozaemon was born in Omi(Shiga) and moved to Kyoto Rakuhoku, (1532-1555). He started to make pottery ware. In 1554 he opened first kiln. Since then, each generation made Chawan for Taokugawa Government and others. Fraom 9th generation, it was allowed to use Hozan chop seal and received Hozan. So the artist name and family are renown Chawan artist in Kyoto several hundred years. Today, there is 20th Hozan is working now. |
