The size: 18"Wide x 72"Long, Image area size: 13"Wx38 1/2"Long. Artist: Kano Mitsuyori, also known as Sanraku (1559-1635) The subject: The Story of Moso(Meng Zong). Medium: Sumi(black ink) and a couple of color, green and brown painted on paper. Scroll is done with silk brocade. Jikuend(scroll end) made with bone. It came with Kiri Box (inside Kiri box has some Kanji calligraphy with seal). Seal of Mitsunori (lower)located on lower right with another seal(upper). which The second seal above the seal of Sanraku appeared(from Shokei-Moji) like the seal of Ten-Kyu-In which is famous temple of Nyoshinji, in Kyoto where some of Sanrak’s works are owned. The condition of scroll: very good for the age. The painted area has been remounted in the past with silk brocade body many years ago, about 150 years ago. The painting are itself is good shape other than age worn. The near top left area has some old restored spots. Other than these, some aged spots. No tear on scroll. There ware a couple of worm worn holes has been mended at 8 1/2" down from top and 7 1/2" from left, one by same line near top. Ten-jiku(top of scroll). Leftside scroll edge has little bit worn from worm bitten as photo showing. Kano Mitsunyori(1559-1635), Sanraku was Mitsunori's pen name. The leader of the Kano school active was in Kyoto. He was first student of Eitoku Kano who painted many painting in Nijo Castle in Kyoto. Sanraku founded the school, known as Kyo Kano (Kyoto Kano), has started to receive attention from scholars only recently. It developed a distinct style of its own, easily discernible from that of the Edo (modern Tokyo) branch of the Kano school, which prospered as the official painters to the shoguns. The story of scroll: Moso (Meng Zong) is a paragon of man from “Records of Fillial Piety in 24 Chapters” compiled in the Yuan dynasty, China. When his mother weas serioustly ill, he walked around a snow covered bamboo grove looking for a bamboo shoot, her favorite delicacy. As is was a cold winter, it was very hard to find one, and he totally exhausted. However, when he finally flopped onto the ground, he found one under the snow. His mother fully recovered after eating it. Moso with the Hoe in the straw mantle and hat at the snow scene. with carrying bamboo shoot. The snow still on the leaves of bamboo. The colors used on this scroll with Sumi(Balck ink), some pale green on the bamboo leaves on the kimono. Little brown tone on the face area and straw mantle. It has wonderful brush stroke works. The age of painting around 1600's. |
