The size of Water Jug: 8 3/4” (with handle and spout), Long, 5 13/16” Dia(without spout and handle) x 5” High to top of knob, 4 1/2” High to top of cover, without knob. This is very impressive Japanese Mizutsugi (water jug) by Seifu Yohei IV (1871-1951). His workmanship is good as Seifu Yohei III. This white porcelain called Seifu’s famous, “Taihakui” (ivory white porcelain). The Water jug has very handsome shape body as well as beautiful Handle, Spout, plus somekind animal knob. Foo dog or other. It came with Tomobako as well as Tomonuno (matching clothe with seal of Seifu). The cover top has Japanese written, “Tai-Haku-Ji” “Mizutsugi”(water jug), with chop sea of Seifu. Inside cover written in Japanese, “Seifu Zo” (Seifu made) with chop seal of Seifu as well. There is incised signature of “Seifu” on the center of bottom jug. The condition of Water jug excellent, no chip, no crack and no hairline. Please note, there is original kiln spot at the lower end of around the handle which drying process caused the gap between body to jug. However, it is completely glazed over and all the way around the handle to Jug body. It sometime happened to this kind delicate work. My photos shown from both angle as well as smoothed underneath glazed the handle. No flaw on upper handle. The dating item from late Taisho around 1920’s. Seifu Yohei IV (1871-1951)
The second son of Seifū Yohei III (1851-1914) who was the member of Teishitsu Gigeiin(Imperial Household Artist member). He studied literati-style painting under Tanomura Shōsai (1845-1909), a son of Tanomura Chokunyū, in Osaka for three years. In 1914, he succeeded to the head of the family and produced works mostly in his father’s style. He won a number of prizes including the Golden Prize at the Panama Pacific International Exposition, San Francisco in 1916 and the exhibitions of the Japan Art Association in 1916 and 1918. He produced several works for members of the Imperial family. His works has been collected by many worldwide collectors since Seifu III are in British Museum as well as Tokyo National Museum and around the world. Recent trend is also toward to Seifu Yohei IV in same manner.
