Attractive Japanese Celadon Vase by Kato Keizan II
The size of Celadon Vase: 7 3/4" High x 3 5/16" Dia widest. It is beautifully made Japanese Porcelain Seiji(Celadon) vase by Kato Keizan II, who was prominent Porcelain artist in Kyoto. The shape of vase done in Kinuta Seiji(longquan ware style, southern sond dynasty) with Ho-o(pheonix bird) ears designs. It came with Tomobako as well as cloth with artist chop seal. The top of cover written in Japanese, "Kinuta Seiji"(kinuta celadon), "Ho-O Mimi Hanaike"(Ho-o Ears Flower Vase) with Keizan seal. Inside cover, "Keizan Saku"(Keizan made) with Kyoshin-an chop seal. The condition of Seiji vase excellent, no chip, no crack and no hairline. Dating from 1950-1960's. The size of vase is little bit smaller because it was made for Tea Room's Tokonoma use. The vase has carved signature of "Kizan" on bottom of vase. Please see Tomobako photos at #1116604

Kato Keizan II (1913-1995)
He was born as eldest son of Kato Keizan 1st. After he graduated from Kyoto Industrial school, he has studied the glazing, forming of basic techniques at Kyoto National Pottery Laboratory. From, 1931, he helped his father and studied under 1st Keizan. The same year, he becasme the member of Shiko Kougeikai which was sponsered by 5th Kiyomizu Rokubei. He also stduied under 5th Rokubei. His work has been accepted at Teiten(imperial art exhibition) and Kyoto prefecture exhibition. In 1940, he has received the certificate from Kyoto commerce department as the preserver of technique and received high reputation. After the war, in 1955, he became Kyoto Ceramic Artist Association member. His works and reputation was established in Kyoto Ceramic world. After his father Keizan 1st passed way in 1963, he has became and succeded as Keizan II and he moved his kiln to O-Yamazaki. He developed his own technique the recreation of Shinese Song Seiji by using his fundamental technique learned from his father. As the feature works by Keizan II including Tenryuji Seiji, Tobi Seiji(spotted seiji), Ivory white porcelain, purple Seiji, Song Seiji and the development of those types work. He has also left many of other works added by flower petal works as well as using dragon design.
