Very Rare Chinese Ivory Carving, Phoenix Bird 17C-18C

The size of Chinese Ivory Carving: 2 7/8" High, 4 1/8" over all length, 1 7/8". It is very rare Chinese Ivory Carving of kind. The subject of Phoenix bird(Feng-Huang), Japanese called Ho-o bird. The carving done with very fine works. The eyes of Phoenix done in somekind stone or beads. The bird is in the position of opening one side wing raising one side shoulder. The head of bird looking back. The details of carvings are wonderful even each finger of bird. Carver really captures the movement of bird. The condition of carving excellent other than long time aged lines around the whole carving which are expected for this old Ivory carving piece. No chip, no outside forced damage. It is a one of most impressive Chinese Ivory carving ever seen with unusual form. The looking the face of Phoenix appearing looks like live. The age of carving 200 to 300 years old antiques. I would estimate the age of Ivory carving from early Qing dynasty 1640's to mid 1700's or could be little older into late Ming. There is nerve point spot under the belly of phoenix. The weight of carving 5 oz plus. Nice good weight. The suraface has more patina aged shineness than my photos. We ship Ivory to US address only.

Chinese phoenix (Feng-Huang) looks like a peacock but the stories tell that it is in fact a much more sizable animal than its modern-day bird. Some sources say that this mythic bird has its roots in a prehistorical, possibly ostrich-like huge bird that lived long time ago in China. In stories, the Feng huang is either described as being white, black, green, yellow or red. It is written that the bird drinks from sacred springs, nests in Chinese plane trees and feeds on bamboo seeds. There are many stories has been written on Phoenix bird from ancient Chinese or Japanese as well.
